Starting a new kitchen design is so exciting — it’s the heart of your home and such a rewarding space to get right. But I know from experience that it can also feel a little overwhelming at the beginning. There’s so much to think about — design, layout, appliances, windows, colours — it’s hard to know where to start. That’s why below, I’ve outlined the top five things to focus on first to set you up for a smooth and successful project.

  1. Contact a Kitchen Designer Early

Honestly, this is the most important step. Speak to a kitchen designer as early as possible — ideally before any building work starts or windows are ordered. The reason is simple: your layout, windows, and services (like plumbing and electrics) all need to work together.

I have seen projects where windows were fitted before the design stage, and it limited where the sink or hob could go. A quick chat with a designer early on can save you a lot of time, money, and frustration later.

2. Decide on Your Appliances

Kitchen Appliances

Appliances aren’t just add-ons — they often shape your entire kitchen layout. Before any cabinetry is designed, decide on the big items: will you go for a range cooker or built-in ovens? Do you prefer a freestanding or integrated fridge-freezer? And don’t forget those lovely extras like a wine cooler or coffee machines.

Each of these choices affects space, power, and ventilation, so it’s best to lock them in early with your designer. It makes planning smoother and ensures everything fits beautifully.

3. Define Your Needs and Set a Budget

Before choosing finishes or fixtures, think about how you really use your kitchen. Is it for family gatherings, quick weekday meals, or entertaining friends? Knowing your priorities helps shape a design that actually works for you.

Once that’s clear, set a realistic budget. Include cabinetry, appliances, flooring, lighting, and installation — and always keep a little aside for surprises (there are usually a few!).

4. Gather Inspiration

This is the fun part! Start collecting ideas that inspire you — Pinterest, Instagram, or even photos from friends’ homes. Save images of layouts, colours, and materials that catch your eye. When I work with clients, I love seeing what they’ve collected; it helps me understand their style and turn that vision into a practical design.

5. Plan Your Timeline

A new kitchen doesn’t happen overnight. From design approval to installation, the process can take several weeks — especially if there’s building work involved. Planning ahead helps things run smoothly and gives you time to prepare for life without a working kitchen during the fit-out.

Starting your kitchen design is such an exciting step, and with the right planning, it doesn’t have to feel stressful. My biggest piece of advice? Talk to a kitchen designer early — before you finalise windows, layout, or appliances. It’s the best way to make sure your new kitchen not only looks beautiful but also works perfectly for the way you live.
