When it comes to designing a kitchen, the worktop is a key element that not only sets the tone but also needs to be highly functional. Barry and Lyndsey, with their years of experience at Dunvara Design, have seen and recommended a wide range of materials. Here’s their guide to choosing the best kitchen worktop for your home, balancing aesthetics, durability, and practicality.
For those seeking a sleek, durable, and luxurious look, we always recommend a stone worktop. Stone options like marble and quartz bring a natural, elegant appeal that’s hard to beat.
Our preferred brand, Cosentino, offers two exceptional choices: Dekton and Silestone. Both are highly durable, heat-resistant, and scratch-resistant, making them excellent for a busy kitchen. Dekton, with its ultra-compact finish, and Silestone, with its varied colour palette, are reliable options that add both beauty and functionality.
Synthetic laminate worktops are a popular choice for many homes, especially those looking for affordability with style. These tops come in a range of colours and finishes, allowing you to achieve a modern aesthetic without breaking the bank.
However, laminates do require a bit more maintenance. They’re sensitive to moisture, so you’ll need to ensure proper care to avoid damage over time. Regular upkeep can keep a laminate worktop looking fresh, though it may require a bit of attention to ensure its longevity.
Solid timber is one of our favourite materials for adding warmth to a kitchen. Its natural grain and character are unmatched, giving any kitchen a homely, inviting look. We love adding timber worktops in specific areas, such as window seats, to break up other materials with a softer, more organic touch.
Do bear in mind that timber requires regular oiling and maintenance to keep it looking its best. It can also be prone to small dings and scratches, which, in our opinion, often add character rather than detract from it.
For a kitchen that leans more towards an industrial aesthetic, steel worktops can offer a bold, modern look. Stainless steel is tough, heat-resistant, and easy to clean, making it a popular choice in professional kitchens.
However, it’s worth noting that a steel worktop may not suit every home. It can sometimes feel too industrial for a residential kitchen, and it tends to show fingerprints and smudges easily. We’d typically recommend this option for those looking to create a distinctive and edgy vibe.
Choosing the right kitchen worktop depends on your style preferences, lifestyle, and how much time you’re willing to invest in upkeep. Barry and Lyndsey are always here to advise on what’s best for your space, drawing on years of experience and a passion for creating kitchens that are as functional as they are beautiful. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless luxury of stone, the warmth of timber, or something more modern, we’re here to help guide you through each step.
